Twelve by Twelve

I got accepted into the Betz Gallery's Twelve by Twelve show that will run November 6 - 25, 2010. The paintings are due next week, which is why I am trying to finish "Open Door" so quickly. This will be my first show since I graduated, so I am pretty excited about getting in.

Mountainside (in progress)

I was overwhelmed by all the detail and color in the rocks when I first began this painting. As I was laying in bed one night having trouble falling asleep, I decided to paint the light base color of the rock first and then add color over it, instead of the other way around. I feel a lot more confidence attacking this painting now. Sometimes not being able to fall asleep isn't so bad.

Blue Plateau (in progress)

Another 12x12 piece, although this one is not intended for the upcoming show. This painting is based on a set of photographs I took during our last drive though Southern Utah. It was the middle of winter, and the snow on the cliffs was outstanding.

Open Door (in progress)

I am trying to get this painting started and finished by next week. If I get into the 12x12 show I would like to have a third painting to show. I have the first 2 layers down...7 days left to work on it.

Mark (in progress)

Slowly is the word with these paintings, but I am enjoying the results of every session. One of my new favorite things to do is toggle back and forth between old and new pictures. Sometimes, it is a little discouraging because the only difference is a slight change in the picture. But sometimes is is really dramatic, and the improvements really stand out. For example, I redid parts of the collar and shirt. The changes I made were not huge, but the effect is. Try scrolling up and down the page to compare the collars for yourself.

Mark (in progress)

Amy (in progress)

Just lightening up those shadows on the face made me look so much less freaky. Although, there is still much to be done in the upcoming layers.

Mountainside (in progress)

This underpainting is the staging for a scene from the mountains of the French Alps, with shades of purple and blue rocks overgrown by green grasses and various flowers. I have had this image in my idea box since I took the picture 4 years ago, so I am looking forward to finally painting it.

Mark (in progress)

Amy (in progress)

Pretty sure I look even more scary now that before. After working on Mark's portrait today as well, I realized that the shadows on my face are just way too dark. So before I go onto the next layers I will be correcting that.

Poolside (in progress)

I have just a few couple small details to fix and then I think I am done with this piece.
